PONTUS. Neocaesarea. Severus Alexander, 222-235. (Bronze, 27 mm, 13.01 g, 11 h), year 163 = 226-227. Α Κ Μ ΑΥP CEΟΥ ΑΛEΞΑΝΔΡΟC Laureate and cuirassed bust of Severus Alexander to right. Rev. ΚΟΙ ΠΟ ΝEΟΚ ΜΗΤΡΟ ΔΙC ΝЄΩΚΟΡ / EΤ ΡΞΓ Frontal view of a two storied nymphaeum containing a statue of Tyche, holding rudder and cornucopiae, within. Cf. Çizmeli 244 (different dies and slightly different legends). Price & Trell fig. 71. RPC VI Online temp. 6525 (same dies as illustrated example). Cf. SNG von Aulock 4956( for a coin of Antioch in Pisidia employing the same obverse die). The third known example, and a fantastic architectural type. Light porosity, pit on obverse, otherwise, very fine.


The obverse die used to strike this coin was also used to strike coins for Antioch in Pisidia (cf. SNG von Aulock 4956)!
